Masuwe Lodge
Originally opened in 1992 Masuwe was the flagship lodge of Landela Safaris and one of the first bush lodges at the Falls. For the last 15 years Masuwe has been either leased to other safari operators or closed and attended by care-takers. In May 2017, Masuwe Lodge has re-opened after a total re-build and re-furbish. New pathways link the rooms through the old and established gardens; the glitter stone of the original swimming pool again sparkles in the sun-light; old decks have been replaced as have the old green safari tents. Masuwe Lodge is a dream safari destination – it combines bush and wildlife with the Zambezi River. It combines all-inclusive hospitality with the freedom of exploring the local craft markets. Imagine tackling white water rafting or an evening sun-downer cruise on the Zambezi River, imagine shopping in the curio stores by day but, each evening returning to the sounds, smells, tastes and natural setting that are – life on safari.
The lodge’s nine Wilderness Tents combine thatch and canvas with an attached local stone bathroom (shower, vanity and toilet) and a front deck with comfortable seating and views of the natural bushland where wildlife roams. Supremely comfortable king (or twin) beds are made up with top quality cotton bed linen and canopied with mosquito netting. From your bed you can look over your toes, through the glass sliding doors, and watch the sunrise tint the sky pink.
A Hide-Away is tucked into a private spot overlooking a small water hole and beautiful natural bushland. With double the floor space and a lovely big deck area, the Hide-Away is perfect for romantics and honeymooners. The Hide-Away has an indoor double shower, with a view, an outdoor bathtub for two and a minibar stocked with your personal choice of local brand drinks. Named after the camouflaged shelter used to observe wildlife – “a hide” – the Hide-Away is perfect for any two-people wanting to hide from the world.
Privately situated with bush all around, the Family Nest is named after the weaver bird nests found around Masuwe. The Nest is built of stone and thatch, reminiscent of the old farm homesteads of Zimbabwe. The upstairs master bedroom has a private relaxation area, king sized bed with lovely treetop views and an en suite bathroom. Downstairs there is a second smaller bedroom with own bathroom as well as an indoor living area and a kitchenette with mini-bar stocked to your tastes (local brand drinks included). Outdoors, and surrounded by natural bush, there is shaded deck, a sunny plunge pool and a family sized braai (BBQ) area.
The lodge’s main lodge overlooks a waterhole and the often dry Masuwe River. Perched high on a hill that exudes a positive energy. The dining, bar, lounge, pool and relaxation areas are well shaded and open to the breezes, birdlife and wildlife that calls Masuwe home. The old stone ‘bones’ of the original Masuwe Lodge have been restored and the thatched roof has been replaced, the kitchen and bar have been rebuilt and a welcoming staff, including many of the original team, are gathering to host you.
