Kruger
Located within an hour’s flight east of Johannesburg in northern South Africa, the Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s largest and finest safari regions. Home to the Big Five and a large concentration of game, this is park can be regarded as one of the best in the continent of Africa.
Although the private reserves that sits on the borders of the Kruger National Park – the Sabi Sands and Timbavati in particular, are more famous, the park itself is home to some of Africa’s finer safari lodges and game-filled viewing areas.
The Kruger is home to a network of tarmac roads that enable a unique self-drive market to explore the park. This self-drive market, as well as camping safaris and overland group tours, use these roads, creating a high build-up of traffic and a style of safari experience that may not be for everyone. But within the Kruger National Park, however, there are a number of private concessions; where only guests staying within the area can go on safari. Self-drivers and the mini-bus crowd will not be able to enter these areas and so the result is a wilderness experience that remains as exclusive as possible within the Kruger Park.
Guests staying at the lodges within the Kruger Private Concessions also have access to Kruger National Park and the guide may choose to go into the park for special sightings. There is an incredible wealth of wildlife to be found in the private areas and most guests will opt to stay within their concession to enjoy the more intimate encounters available. Big-game sightings are certainly good, but the main attraction of this area is its feeling of true wilderness.
