Grootbos
Nestled amongst the hills, 20 minutes’ drive east of Hermanus, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is a real gem. It’s a small but very well-kept reserve which is dedicated to the preservation and understanding of the endemic fynbos ecosystem – which once covered much of Cape. It’s also the location for several first-class lodges.
Grootbos Forest Lodge (16 suites) is set within an impressive old milkwood forest within the small, but pristine Grootbos Nature Reserve. It bills itself as a ‘a masterpiece of sophisticated contemporary design – within a five-star eco-paradise‘, whilst attracting visitors for the nature on its reserve and in the ocean at the bottom of the hill. Tucked away amongst the knarled and twisted boughs of the milkwood forest, the Forest Lodge does have quite a magical situation. It has been constructed with some elegance and style using plenty of local sandstone and sustainably harvested timber – on a hillside which is close to its old sister lodge, Grootbos Garden Lodge.
The thatched Garden Lodge (11 rooms) at Grootbos overlooks the Atlantic coast, just a short drive east of Hermanus. It’s set within the beautiful Grootbos Private Natural Reserve, which covers about 2,500ha (2.5km2) of natural coastal fynbos. It promises high-quality family-friendly accommodation, service and food, plus lots of activities focused on its natural environment.
The large thatched main area at Garden Lodge has a contemporary African theme and feel, using earthy colours for the furnishings, with prints and woven baskets adorning the walls. This open-plan area houses the reception, a bar, several small lounge areas and a dining room with a central fireplace – which is quite a feature.
